Headed to Williamsburg, Virginia

The NCAA men’s soccer selection show aired on ESPNews tonight where we were one of the first teams announced in the bracket. Wake Forest was showcased at the beginning of the show for having won the national championship last year and getting the number one seed in this year’s tournament. The show then transitioned to the first round match up of William and Mary vs. Winthrop, where the winner will head to Wake Forest in the second round of the tournament. Our first round match is this Friday at seven o’clock at William and Mary. The team is leaving at eight on Thursday morning, then we’ll have a training session at William and Mary on Thursday afternoon. I can only hope that my coaches want to have the game filmed so that they will ask me to go with the team!

A little history — This is Winthrop’s third appearance in the NCAA tournament, while it’s W&M’s thirteenth. Winthrop’s last national tournament appearance was in 2006 where they lost in PK’s to Old Dominion in the first round. W&M’s last appearance was in 2002 where they beat Duke in the first round and The University of Virginia in the second round, before losing to Penn State in the Sweet 16 in overtime. This season Winthrop and W&M shared two common opponents on their respective schedules. Both Winthrop and W&M played UNC-Greensboro and Elon. Winthrop beat UNC-G 3-2 and Elon 2-1, while W&M beat UNC-G 2-1 and Elon 2-1. These common results prove that this game is going to be a great match.
