Regular Season Big South Champions
The six hour round trip ride on the bus was definitely worth it tonight. Four other injured/red shirt players and I joined the fan bus tonight for a great college soccer match. When we first got there, the atmosphere was already intense. Coastal fans packed the stands and lined the fence around the field. Us guys brought some noise makers into the stadium after seeing a sign that read, “No artificial noise makers aloud.” What kind of rule is that? This is a college soccer match, this rule had to be broken. The game didn’t start off too well. Coastal was awarded a penalty kick in the 5th minute of play. After about 30 minutes of us being obnoxious fans in the stands, a police officer came up and told us that we had to “knock it off.” This worked out fine, the moment he left to go back down the steps all forty of us Winthrop fans started yelling, making “non-artificial noise.” We also had some heated smack-talk throughout the half with some rude Coastal fans. At half time, the score read 1-0 Coastal. Not long into the first half we tied it up 1-1. But just two minutes later, Coastal took the lead again, 2-1. If you’re a soccer fan, or even if you’re not, being at this type of game where both teams were attacking as well as they could, was an awesome sight. With about fifteen minutes to go, we scored to tie it up 2-2. As the clock was winding down, everyone was expecting this one to go into overtime— this was before Matt Lacey scored his first goal of the season with a thirty yard blast into the top left corner of the net. It was unreal. The Winthrop section went ecstatic, we let every Coastal fan there know that we just took the lead, for good.
