Radford, Virginia
The drive from Winthrop to Radford takes about three and a half hours. You drive through a state and a half, weaving in and out of the Appalachian Mountains. What a sight. The fall colors of the trees and nature are amazing. At point, I was staring out the window for at least thirty minutes straight; the bus was up on a ridge looking down at a valley, overlooking some small Virginia town, red and orange from the leaves of trees covering the town. It was a great drive…
Anyways, now to the soccer. Last year when I was in the middle of all my recruiting stuff, Radford had asked me to come up for an official visit.. after researching their school, I declined their offer because of the school’s academic standing. I didn’t think Radford would give me what I wanted in a college education. I think if I had gone on the visit though, I would have been impressed. Radford is a little bigger than Winthrop at about nine thousand students. But the campus is pretty cool. Radford, Virginia is a pretty old town. The campus sits right in the middle of the town, with old buildings, little town squares, and brick paved sidewalks, it’s awesome. I was even more impressed with the soccer stadium, which probably seats three thousand spectators, if not more. Six lanes of train tracks sit right behind the stadium, giving it a really cool vibe. I wish I had a camera so I could post some pictures of this place.
The temperature was in the upper 40’s - low 50’s at game time. It was pretty chilly. This didn’t bother us though, as we had a very successful game. We won 3-0… putting us at 10-3 overall, and 4-0 in the conference. We’re sitting very comfortably now going into the last half of our conference slate. We control our own destiny now, a couple more conference wins and we win the regular season conference championship and get a #1 seed in the conference tournament.
We play College of Charleston on Tuesday night at home in a non-conference match, then pick up conference play on Saturday afternoon as we travel to UNC-Asheville.
Things back at the ‘Throp are… quiet, to say the least. Being here on fall break reminds me of pre-season. No one is here. It’s nice to have a little peace and quiet.
Bad news though.. I’m phone-less after our trip to Radford yesterday. I’m pretty sure when I was sleeping on the bus, my phone fell out of my pocket and is now underneath my seat somewhere. I know I had it on the bus on the way home… hopefully I can get it soon. I feel so weird not having it.
Looks like a nice cold-front has swept across the south-east this morning, making the weather sunny and crisp.. if you know what I mean. At least that’s what it’s like here in Rock Hill. I like it.
