Athens

After practice on Friday afternoon, I headed southwest for three and a half hours, to Athens, Ga. Home of the bulldogs.. and my best friends. With no practice on Saturday, this had to happen. It was probably the only break I will get the entire semester, except for Thanksgiving. College soccer consumes lives, even those who are injured.

I’ve always been a fan of the University of Georgia and have even been by Sanford Stadium before, but I’ve never really “experienced” Athens. Being with my friends on Friday and Saturday was awesome. It felt like I never left them. The only weird part about being there was the size of UGA compared to Winthrop. I can’t imagine myself there, on crutches for three weeks, having to go a mile to my next class. Actually, I can imagine that, and it doesn’t look fun. The campus in Athens has to be at least ten times the size of Winthrop, if not more. I like it.. a lot. UGA has a North, South, East, and West campus.. they’re all enormous. On Saturday afternoon, Sheida toured me around campus, to all the buildings she has class in, and the paths that she walks. We also drove about a mile off campus (the highlight of the day) to the UGA soccer complex. After, we met with all our friends and headed downtown for dinner and some chill time.

This was the most enjoyable weekend in college I’ve had so far. I’m not trying to take anything away from my Winthrop experience, being a part of my team has been sweet. But my UGA experience had a very special feel to it, one that couldn’t be fulfilled at Winthrop. Seven hours in my car was more than worth it.
