Finally

My dorm has been without internet for the past four days. Its amazing how “cut off from the world” I feel just by not having internet. Our society has really become dependent on technology. Ok anyways.. its been a pretty crazy few days with everyone moving in and stuff. The campus has totally changed looks as now it is completely packed with students. Its nice that everyone is here and everything… but I kind of miss the quietness that was here last week with just the athletes on campus.

I’ve been crutching around, of course, which has been quite a sight. If I walk for more than 10 minutes at a time, I start sweating. I do need to do some sort of physical activity though, and I’ve got to tell you, if you’ve never been on crutches, it is definitely a workout. My arms have never been so sore.

My mom bought me this daily devotional book for me to take to college. It’s a sports devotional, so all the stories I can relate to, they’re pretty interesting. The day I got back to the campus after my surgery I read that day’s devotional… The story was about a football player. He was a standout athlete in high school, and got a scholarship to play in college. He was a pretty big-headed guy, being the start athlete that he was. Ironically enough, in the middle of the season, he broke his fifth metatarsal in his foot and was out for the entire season. The devotional was about how this injury changed this athlete; that God made this happen to deflate his big head. This made me realize that God didn’t allow my injury to happen to make me a worse person, but a better person. I’m not saying that I had a huge head coming into preseason at Winthrop, but I guess I kind of thought I was “above” the students that weren’t athletes. The scripture from the devotional was from James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble”. I thought that it was pretty cool that I read this right after getting back from surgery.. it made me realize a lot of things.

Last night we had our first home game of the season. We hosted the Clemson Tigers. What an atmosphere that was to be in. Eagle field was packed to the max with a record setting crowd of 2,175 fans. The home stands were filled up, as well as the two opposite stands on the other side of the field. The field is also enclosed by a fence, and the entire perimeter of the fence was packed with fans. It was awesome to be there on the bench. Although I didn’t get to suit up and play (obviously), it was still an awesome experience. It was like all my work in high school payed off, I was playing against the Clemson Tigers, it was unreal. I can’t wait to actually play.

The game ended in a 0-0 draw, but could have gone either way. We had multiple chances on goal and Clemson had a shot off the post. It was a pretty entertaining game and a great performance in front of our home fans. The best part of the whole game though was the heckling of the Clemson goalkeeper. The Winthrop frat students decided to stand right behind the Clemson goal and talk to trash to the keeper the entire game, it was great. This weekend the team travels to Gardner-Webb for a tournament. We’ll play two teams from Tennessee, Lipscomb and Belmont.

Classes start tomorrow. I’m kind of ready to start.. but I’m sure I’ll regret that statement when I have two hours of biology homework tomorrow night.
